2015 Americas’ Cup

29 May 2015to6 Jun 2015

We are close to finalising the dates for the 2015 Vimy Ridge Classic and Americas’ Cup to be held in Winnipeg, Canada. The provisional dates are 29th May through to 6th June 2015 and we hope to have these confirmed within the next few days. Those of you who attended the inaugural event there in 2013 will know what a great event the Canadians organised for us, and it has become the yardstick by which our other events are measured.

The New Zealand Billiards & Snooker Association held two back-to-back World Ranking events in New Zealand during September. The Hamilton Open preceded the New Zealand Open, both of which carried WBL (Level 1) World Ranking Points.
The New Zealand Open is a long established event and we are delighted to be adopting this in to the world ranking circuit.
The Hamilton Open took place between Tuesday 23rd & Thursday 25th September, immediately followed by the New Zealand Open between Friday 26th & Sunday 28th September.

Venue
Both events took place at the Hamilton Cosmopolitan Club, Claudelands Road, Hamilton, Waikato. Table 4 is the table on which Peter Gilchrist achieved his World Record break of 1346 in 2007.

Grant Hayward defeated Bryce Good in an all New Zealand final of the Hamilton Open.

Grant Hayward does it again in the NZ Open !  From our NZ correspondent (Wayne) :

In an International field for the NZ Open Billiards,  Hayward had some close shaves with the Australians  when in the quarters beating first Australian’s Jason Colebrook (Melbourne)  344 – 342,  and then `hurting’ another one of their reps in the semi’s  George Chammas (Sydney)  445-421.

In the  3 hour final,  Paul Stocker (NZ),  could not withstand the onslaught that Hayward threw at him winning 727-521.  Stocker (Hawkes Bay) who was defending his Title,  just couldn’t get the balls to run for him.

Hayward,  who is a pretty handy golfer,  has represented NZ in all forms of CueSport around the World -Snooker, Billiards,  8ball & 9Ball,  has commented that of all sports he has played,  Billiards is the most challenging.

…and there’s more!
Excitingly for September 2015 & 2017 the NZBSA are planning to have 4 World Ranking tournaments over 15 days, with events in Christchurch, Auckland and two in Hamilton, including the regional Major (Level 5) event for the Oceania region; perfect timing for players to get match practice before the Worlds at Leeds in October 2015.

2014 Northern Snooker Centre Open

The 2014 Northern Snooker Centre Open took place over the weekend with Peter Gilchrist defeating Rob Hall in the final. Peter had breaks of 120, 152, 200 & 304 unfinished (the highest of the event) in the final, which he won 728 – 164. The two semi finalists were both from Ireland, with Wayne Doyle and John Kehoe eventually losing out to Gilchrist and Hall respectively.

The Plate Flyer was won by Adam Clarke (who during the Home Internationals on Friday had beaten his highest match break twice in the same match) narrowly defeating Steve Tuck 125 – 108 in the final.

Our thanks must go to the Home International Billiards & Snooker Federation and particularly Eugene O’Connor and his team for officiating this event. Thanks also to the Northern Snooker Centre for hosting and sponsoring the tournament and for providing the first class facilities we have become accustomed to at the club. Lastly, thanks to Chris Taylor for organising the ‘random’ draw and for making it such an event!

This was the final tournament of the 2013/14 playing season.
