2014 New Zealand Open

23 Sep 2014to28 Sep 2014

We are pleased to announce that the New Zealand Billiards & Snooker Association are organising two back-to-back World Ranking events in New Zealand during September. The Hamilton Open will precede the New Zealand Open, both of which will carry WBL (Level 1) World Ranking Points. The New Zealand Open is a long established event and we are delighted to be adopting this in to the world ranking circuit.

The Hamilton Open takes place between Tuesday 23rd & Thursday 25th September, immediately followed by the New Zealand Open between Friday 26th & Sunday 28th September.

Both events take place at the Hamilton Cosmopolitan Club, Claudelands Road, Hamilton, Waikato. The Hamilton Cosmopolitan Club has 8 tables. Table 4 is the table on which Peter Gilchrist achieved his World Record break of 1346 in 2007. Peter has said via email that he is 95% sure he will be here again this year to try to beat the record.

2014 Northern Snooker Centre Open

23 Aug 2014to24 Aug 2014

The 2014 Northern Snooker Centre Open took place over the weekend with Peter Gilchrist defeating Rob Hall in the final. Peter had breaks of 120, 152, 200 & 304 unfinished (the highest of the event) in the final, which he won 728 – 164. The two semi finalists were both from Ireland, with Wayne Doyle and John Kehoe eventually losing out to Gilchrist and Hall respectively.

The Plate Flyer was won by Adam Clarke (who during the Home Internationals on Friday had beaten his highest match break twice in the same match) narrowly defeating Steve Tuck 125 – 108 in the final.

Our thanks must go to the Home International Billiards & Snooker Federation and particularly Eugene O’Connor and his team for officiating this event. Thanks also to the Northern Snooker Centre for hosting and sponsoring the event and for providing the first class facilities we have become accustomed to at the club. Lastly, thanks to Chris Taylor for organising the ‘random’ draw and for making it such an event!

This was the final tournament of the 2013/14 playing season.

Scottish Billiards Championship

At the finals of the Scottish Billiards Championship, Dave Sneddon was finally toppled from his 27-year domination of Scottish Billiards when he was defeated by Hugh Eldon by a single point !

The final score was 422-423 in  favour of Hugh.

The scoring and breaks were uncharacteristically low due to the ultra fast snooker table which was throwing very wide with the ball sliding off the cushions. Both players struggled to keep a break going as a result.

Thanks to referee Dougie Melrose and also Dave Johnstone of Minnesota Fats Snooker Club in Glasgow.
